It looks like Virginia has its very own weasel-Judas governor! I know you guys for you guys in the northeast, you're used to this kind of thing, but down here we were hoping that our first Catholic governor would be, ya know, Catholic. I know, Kaine was a missionary and all that, but now he will be the Defender of the Faith -- the faith of the Culture of Death. He promised it.
Luckily, Kaine won't have many people to work with, since the legislature is overwhelmingly Republican. No pro-abortion legislation will be submitted for his signature.

In a statement read in parishes ten days before the election he said: 'Intrinsically evil acts such as abortion or research on stem cells taken from human embryos cannot be placed on the same level as debates over war or capital punishment.... It is simply not possible to serve and promote the common good of our nation by voting for a candidate who, once in office, will do nothing to limit or restrict the deliberate destruction of innocent human life.' "

As a new Catholic, I am a bit confused-
Is Kaine a practicing Catholic, or a Catholic in name only? I had no idea he was Catholic! How can you be, and support the democratic platform?

The sad flip side of that, though, Eric, is that Kaine won't SIGN any legislation restricting abortion which Warner similarly vetoed and which doesn't have a veto-proof majority.
Marcia, some Catholic politicians -- too many, in fact -- try to rationalize their support for abortion by calling themselves "pro-choice" and saying that they're merely enforcing the law.
There are many, many problems with that position, which is roughly Kaine's position on the issue (although he tried to pass himself off as pro-life to the voters). Primarily, he ran so he could govern the commonwealth, including pushing for legislation that he favors. He's not a judge or a police officer, who might be able to hide behind "the law" as an excuse.
As far as whether Kaine is a practicing Catholic, that's the implication I got from reading his campaign literature, but maybe somebody else knows differently.
Ah! You have the same perception I do that Kaine made all kinds of promises to make VA safe for all kinds of killing (, unborn babies, death row inmates, and Terri Schiavo-like persons).

Well, "keep Virginia safe" might be more accurate, since all three types of killing are already quite legal here.
I had thought that our faith should call us to challenge unjust (or flat-out evil) laws, and work to change them. Kaine, however, has offered himself as evil's willing executioner.
Let's not conflate abortion and euthanasia with capital punishment. The former two are wrong always and everywhere and for all time, while the state does have the legitimate authority to impose the death penalty under certain circumstances. And there is a big difference between placing the power to kill in the hands of private persons, versus allowing the state to kill on behalf of society.
