Given the title, I'm forced to wonder if Maureen Dowd is really necessary...

MoDo isn't necessary at all -- she was just a replacement for Anna Quindlen. The NYT needed a pro-abortion pseudo-Catholic woman, and she fit the quota.

That article you linked to was nauseating. Maybe years ago she was original, but now Dowd is just like the Times' other columnists: reflexively liberal, loose with the facts, and stylistically ho-hum.
