Philosophy professor James Tuttle is suing Lakeland (OH) Community College. The College reduced his teaching schedule and thus his salary -- contrary to seniority rules -- in an apparent move to punish him after he disclosed his Catholic point of view to his students and even -- shock -- mentioned it in a class syllabus!
Dean Brown went on to suggest that Dr. Tuttle "would be happier in a sectarian classroom."Just imagine the outrage if some other philosophy professor were urged to go get a job at another college because his philosophy was... (you fill in the blank).
I heard about this on Laura I.'s show this morning....The group handling his case seems first rate....www.thefire.org.......................Just a note: Last year the faculty where I teach was informed Good Friday was NOT a day to cancel classes...despite our long tradition of recognizing this as the holiest season of the year for christians...I took it off anyway.
That's where I heard it too: props to Laura Ingraham (yes, a Catholic!) for having a FIRE representative on her show.
"Just imagine the outrage if some other philosophy professor were urged to go get a job at another college because his philosophy was... (you fill in the blank)." Afrocentric ecofeminism!
What I appreciated was the comment by the chemistry professor, about knowing the differences of when it is appropriate. And knowing where a philosophy teacher is coming from is very pertinent. Do the others tell their basic philosophy, before teaching the class?
