Assumption Music

What music does your parish do for Marian feasts? We'll likely be doing the Stravinsky "Ave Maria" and if we have a chance we'll do the Oswald Jaeggi arrangement of the "Salve Mater" chant.

We'll be doing the Victoria Ave Maria preceded by the chant, and I may sing another Ave Maria by Gounod (but not the Bach transcription).

The Bach-Gounod is a bit dramatic for liturgical use... I have sung it as a prelude to weddings many times.

sigh...we had the Bach-Gounod at our wedding...

You're going to have me braving the snakeheads and swimming the Potomac pretty soon. We will probably do "Immaculate Mary" and "Salve Regina." They may try to make us do "Hail Mary, Gentle Woman". One year we did "Immaculate Mary" for both the processional and recessional.

JS,

I agree -- the main drama being the tension felt in wondering whether the tenor can negotiate the top note at the end of the song!

There's another Gounod Ave Maria. The version I have is in A Flat, 3/4 time. The English (protestantized) title is something like "The Cross of Calvary." It has a few high notes, but the approaches are easier and not as dramatic, if you will.

This past May, at my church, I sang a different setting of the Ave Maria every Sunday for "The Month of Our Mother," including the Bach-Gounod, the Schubert (gag), the Franck, and an Italian version by Luigi Luzzi. I would have sung this other Gounod version, but on the fifth Sunday the choir was singing, and we did the familiar Arcadelt setting.

How's the Luzzi Ave? That sounds interesting.

John,

the Luzzi is turn-of-the-20th-century Romantic schlock. I love it.

I might just have to start my own Catholic music blog to post sound files and such like.

John,

Do you really need to get Jaeggi with the Salve Mater? That seems vaguely naughty for some reason.

If you heard the arrangement you would be pleased. Would you like me to scan it for you?

Sure, and I'll scan the Luzzi for you. I'll contact you and send you the E-mail address where I can actually receive attachments.

Actually I was just trying to make an awful pun. If you do the Luzzi, you'll have a lot of 'splainin' to do.

What, no Bruckner?

We'll probably do the Victoria. I'd really like to have a look at the Palestrina "Assumpta es Beata Virgine" and see what the motet is like, but I don't know if that's doable for us.

What? Who?

On life and living in communion with the Catholic Church.
