'Tis the season to say Humbug

...to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Here's what I wrote about it last year, and some comments from elsewhere on the net.

Thanks to Mark Shea for the reminder.

Thanks for the update on the CFHD. I always thought it sounded dubious - like the "Human Fund" on Seinfeld.

We're blessed with a wonderful priest who is kind enough to remind that "this is the Sunday that we take up a second collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. All monies collected in the standard parish envelopes will of course be directed to the diocesan offices. If, however, you would like to donate monies for TRUE human development, please feel free to use the alternate [name of faithful Catholic organization] envelopes provided."

I passed the collection basket this evening for this additional offering, thanks to the heads up provided by you and Mark. Thanks, RC!

I haven't given them money in years. I support local groups that do really good work, plus CRS. Mercy Corps is good too.

In good conscience, I cannot give to CCHD and I also opted out of the "bishop's communications collection" - when I come right down to it, I do not donate to any second collection which goes to the usccb and continues the madness. Especially since it has come out (during the last round of meetings) that 80% of the budget is spent on admin costs.

I take whatever I would have given to those collections and donate it to charities that are truly Catholic and not CINO.

What? Who?

On life and living in communion with the Catholic Church.
