Because of homilies like this.
When you try to explain away the miraculous you end up with happy crap. And people can't grow spiritually from that. So they actively search out and grasp at anything that is other-wordly.
Shame on priests who turn miracles into coincidences and happy stories about sharing and being nice! Nice is not the password to get into heaven. If I ever hear a homily like that at my parish I will hang the priest up by his rainbow suspenders and not let him down until he says "Dominus vobiscum!" Seriously.
It's not just some priests, it's society in general who marginalize miracles. I believe that miracles happen every day in our world, in many places. Some are unseen by people, other are seen, but rationalized away, as the priest did with the nomad bearing scones, or whatever. For example, the airliner that you just stepped off may have had an undetected defective part that could have caused a crash, but it managed to hold in place until mechanics discovered it after landing. That's a miracle. If you are using the multiplication of the loaves and fishes or the raising of Lazarus as your yardstick for miracles in this day and age, you are likely to be setting yourself up for disappointment.
