A beautiful photo…

…of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal on Of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal on Allison Woo’s photoblog. I would link the image here but I don’t want to run afoul of copyright laws. Click away – it’s stunning! A strange thing I noticed, a sanctuary lamp is in the foreground but there is no candle in it.

  1. In Notre Dame the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a side chapel rather than in the tabernacle on the high altar. Hence no candle in the lamp. Given the hustle and bustle there–it’s a popular tourist destination–it only makes sense.

  2. While I was in college, long before I every dreamed on becoming Catholic, I wandered into Notre Dame and sat down and then what should begin to wash over me but Bach’s Toccatta and Fugue in D minor – played on the organ. I had stumbled upon the last free organ concert of the year. There couldn’t have been more than 6 people in the whole place and we just sat and soaked up the beauty.
The pulpit is astonishing – with a magnificent wooden carving of Moses as it’s pedestal. When in Montreal, be sure and drop in!

  3. What struck me about the Basilica is all the rich dark wood. Such a contrast to the massive stone shrine to St. Joseph (the Oratory?). The smaller church called Bon Secours is also a treasure.
On the whole, I dislike Montreal but these two churches are wondrous.
