Now comes what could be the most radical and most successful education reform proposal ever made. The Southern Baptist Convention — the nation’s largest Protestant denomination with about 17 million members — meets this week in Indianapolis, and among the resolutions it is considering is one calling upon parents to withdraw their children from public schools and either educate them at home or enroll them in private Christian academies.
Wow. I’d be even more surprised if they listened en masse.
Yes, you’re right. It seems like a good idea but not feasible.
Why not? Catholics did it when we were a heck of a lot poorer. (Of course, the religious didn’t require too much in the way of salaries.) Catholics are less than 10% of the Virginia population, but if we and the Baptists teamed up, I bet we might get the state to give us a tax rebate for not sending our kids to public schools.
I’m pretty sure I read today that the Southern Baptist Convention ended up rejecting this proposal.
Doesn’t school choice include the right NOT to attend government schools?
