I fell into a purgatorial fire…

God bless Johnny Cash. If there was anybody in popular culture who so well expressed both the strength and misery of man, it was he.
At a ball game the other day shortly after he died (Chicago at Boston), the Fenway showmeisters saluted Cash during a break in the action by playing the tune from his hit “Ring of Fire”. Sure, it was a popular song; it’s a fun song. But with those lyrics? Let’s think this one over, guys.

  1. One of Cash’s best songs, but certainly not the one I would have chosen as a tribute just after his death. Probably some sixteen year old in the sound booth chose that one.

  2. Glad to see that you like Johnny Cash, too. I played his music all day at work on Friday. I completely agree with your assessment of his music — along with Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings, he knew modern man better than just about anyone.
