No, this person was not following the catechism. I do not believe that taking food contrary to law when legal programs exist to provide for free food is what the Church had in mind. What he did was a crime.
However, the young man’s behavior is not the only problem here. The DA on the case is crazy to push for a felony and I would not vote to convict. The guy should be tried, found guilty of a violation, be given probationary supervision with sfficient community service to the school to pay for the food and enrolled in whatever programs are out there to support him physically until he gets himself together, finishes school, and gets a job.
