These days when I hear about some elementary school that’s installing computers by the dozens, my reaction is to look downcast and say, “Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that.” A study in the UK confirms again that products peddled by the educational-technology hucksters can be worse than worthless.

While it’s possible to use computers badly, it’s just as possible to use books badly. The question is whether you can use computers well, whether there’s a point where computers get you better performance than a similar effort without computers in the classroom and finally how do you get from unpacking the computers to adjusting your teaching method to reap the rewards of computer aided education best practices instead of worrying about the worst practices.
