Well some Canadian legal Moore-on just charged President Bush with war crimes before a provincial court in British Columbia. What’s even more ridiculous is that the BC provincial court accepted it. Here’s the details:
A Vancouver lawyer has filed torture-related criminal charges against U.S. President George W. Bush in Vancouver Provincial Court. Gail Davidson, cochair of an international legal group called Lawyers Against the War, told the Straight that she charged Bush on November 30 with seven counts of counselling, aiding, and abetting the commission of torture in connection with the actions of U.S. armed forces at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and at a U.S. naval base at Guantánamo Bay. If the case goes to trial and Bush is found guilty, he would be liable to imprisonment for up to 14 years.
“I went about it in a very organized and solemn way,” Davidson said. “It wasn’t every day that someone was going to walk in and try to lay a charge against a visiting president.”
A justice of the peace accepted the charges, which means there will be a hearing to decide whether or not Bush will be required to appear. Davidson said that within eight days of her laying the charges, the Attorney General of Canada, Irwin Cotler, must give his consent for the case to continue.
Given how Canada’s judiocracy has come to think of itself as the Robed Masters of the Universe, this is one of the few times where I wish the President was more ruthless and less classy. As it stands now, he will probably just ignore the charges and wait for our Attorney General to order the charges dropped. Nevertheless, it would have been nice to see President Bush represented, not by good lawyers but a cruise missle.

I think someone should file corruption charges against Paul Martin in a US court the next time he visits the United States. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
Allow me to sniff Canadianly: we don’t do that sort of thing, PFKAAC: violating diplomatic immunity during an official visit would be un-American.
If you think Bush should nuke Canada because of this, you must in fact be worried that there is some merit in this lawyer’s claim, and that if your president doesn’t take such extreme measures, he will be convicted… why don’t you just say that you’re afraid, instead of writing it in such a round-about way? ;)

Maybe it is un-American, but it’s still preferable to launching air strikes on a country that poses no threat but happens to be making an ass out of itself.

Mercandes, Bush is not my president, although I wish he was. As a Canadian, I don’t have a President. I do, however, have a judiciary that includes the provincial court that accepted this case against the President. That is what worries me, namely, I’m subject to these idiots.
Well, Pete, I for one wish the Congress could just pass a special bill to grant you immediate full citizenship if you so request it.

When, exactly, will the Canadian government put Romeo Dallaire on trail for failure to prevent the Rawanda Massacre? After all, if the Canadian Government is going to start handing out indictments for war crimes, shouldn’t they start with suspects on their own soil?
Hey, let’s not forget that Canada defied sacred International Law when it violated the Kellogg-Briand pact in June of 1944, when it waged offensive war against the sovereign state of France and its protector and ally, the Third Reich.
If only the Canadian soldiers back then had the benefit of postmodern thinkers such as these lawyers, maybe they would have thought twice before landing at Juno Beach. I understand that once upon a time, Canadians revered the men who destroyed the German defenses there on D-Day; now they apparently know better.
I predict the libs will try and impeach Bush early to mid second term.
Which will get nowhere since the GOP firmly controls the house. If the Dems retake the House in 2006, they might go through the motions merely out of spite and revenge for Clinton’s impeachment.
Why go to the trouble – they ahve all to lose and nothing to gain. The smart move would be to just wait it out. I don’t see who the GOP has that could pull off what W has; and the front-runners seem to be CINO/ConsINO – not a big help.
