The tragedy of them all

All of Shakespeare’s tragedies are now available on Open Source Shakespeare, a personal project of mine that will (hopefully) be my grad thesis when it’s all done.

  1. Or until Disney gets the 14 year Constitutional copyright extended to life plus 400 years. . .

  2. Dear Eric,
This is good news indeed. I visited the site as originally configured and announced here and decided that I needed to wait until there was more material.
Now the question is–can you port it to a PDA? Think Clié if you seriously consider the suggestion. If not (well, I can’t really blame you) thanks for this effort. It’s really, really nice.

  3. Dear Eric,
Came back from looking at the site again–beautiful formatting, very clean, spare design. Thank you–it is a treasure!

  4. Thanks for the comments, Steven. I’d consider creating a low-bandwidth version that could run on PDAs. One of my design considerations is that many potential users — including one of my thesis readers — use old browsers, so I have to be careful not to exclude them.
If you mean “will you make downloadable versions of the plays available,” then the answer is yes, that’s in the works, along with printer-friendly versions.

  5. Will audio files of William Shatner reading the plays also be available?
    Seriously, though, great job!

  6. Dear Eric,
Not precisely–after all, the plays are freely available in TXT etc. The true value of a downloadable version would come with the extras you offer and which I suspect are only available via database building of html pages (the character index, for instance). Searchability is of less importance to me, but that gorgeous character index and the really nice formatting would be great to port to PDA. I suspect if there isn’t a tremendous amount of javascript much of the integrity might be preserved via iSilo.
But this is just chat–thanks so much for the effort and the beautiful product. It’s fantastic.
By the way, what version of the Plays are you using? I note the regualrized spellings, etc., so you aren’t using first folio or octavo–it must be an edited edition.
